Big Dawg Productions
Big Dawg Productions is proud to announce their upcoming presentation of THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT, by Jeremy Kareken & David Murrell and Gordon Farrell. Based on the book by John D’Agata and Jim Fingal. The play will run June 10th-13th and 17th-20th, at Thalian Hall, 310 Chestnut St., Wilmington NC. Showtimes are 8pm Thurs.-Sat. and 3pm Sundays. Produced by arrangement with Dramatists Play Service.
Jim Fingal is a fresh-out-of-Harvard fact checker for a prominent but sinking New York magazine. John D’Agata is a talented writer with a transcendent essay about the suicide of a teenage boy—an essay that could save the magazine from collapse. When Jim is assigned to fact check D’Agata’s essay by editor Emily Primrose, the two come head to head in a comedic yet gripping battle over facts versus truth. As Emily has to decide if the essay can be published in time to meet a looming deadline, she (and the audience) is forced to decide if literary beauty and personal truths are as vital to the story as cold, hard facts.
This energetically entertaining and surprisingly funny play is based on true events, and adapted from the book of the same name, written by D’Agata and Fingal.
After 15 months of witnessing the battle over what constitutes the TRUTH vs a FACT play out on our screens and in our national conversations, THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT allows us the chance to laugh, and to breathe, while framing the larger debate into one seemingly simple argument.
“…terrifically funny dialogue…once the writer and the fact-checker get into a lively debate on the ethics of factual truth vs. the beauty of literary dishonesty, it’s time to really sit up and listen…Their deadly serious but oh-so-funny ethical dispute is brilliantly argued…the debate at the heart of this play transcends comedy and demands serious attention.” —Variety.
“…buoyantly literate…wholly resonant questions [are] wrestled with in this briskly entertaining play…you’ll find yourself happy to have your preconceptions disturbed and assumptions unsettled.” —Washington Post.
This play contains adult language and addresses sensitive themes.
Starring Randy Davis, Matt Carter and Eleanor Stafford. Directed by Steve Vernon.
